Kissen x Sugar Slip w/ Krohm, Gawdesque, Thao b2b HLM, Anxxxious T & Yves – 30 April, flucc Wanne
Starting off in the category “I should’ve written this review much sooner and also been more sober at the party to better write it” – I can say I had a great time at this party. On the one hand, atmosphere-wise, this was absolutely a case of asking myself why I have known of Kissen and Sugar Slip for so long but never actually gone to a party of theirs. Just allover sexy, friendly, groovy vibes. Musically, I might struggle with genre names even if the conditions were friendlier towards my memory – what I can say is that coming from a more hyperpop-y and more overtly experimental/deep-fried direction of queer partying, I had the desire to explore a clubbing experience with music that’s a bit more subtle and less maximalist/overstimulating, and I do wanna say this is pretty much what I got! Also of note are the three amazing dancers, Layla Jawhara, Kaisa, and Oleksii, who did awe-inspiring and sexy stuff on the stage for what felt like hours, Krohm playing not only her solo slot but until the very end of the party b2b with Yves, and the decision to place the DJs at audience level – while this might have been to make space for the dancers, it had the added effect of connecting audience and DJs more. Also very trans-femme-forward! Big recommendation all around 💖
Acid Mothers Temple – Chelsea, 13 May
OG Japanese psychedelic rock group, I never really listened before but figured it’s time to catch them live. I will say I was hoping for a bit of an even more freaked-out gig, but that’s a very high bar considering the few records I checked out before. They definitely rocked and soloed hard and have a cool, synth-forward sound; I enjoyed myself but remember thinking that more than the gig itself it made me intrigued in listening to their records more, if only because I think the sound was overall not as great as such a kind of music made me wish for. Thankfully they had like a gazillion singular CDs of mostly weird side projects (or sometimes not even their own stuff) with them so I have some experimental techno by the synth guy (I think) waiting to be experienced at home now. On another note, and in favor of the live setting, it was a pretty cool experience seeing these gaunt old guys just absolutely go for it with closed eyes. Also in the end, one of the guitarist kinda swayed the neck of his guitar over the audience and let us play whatever on it, which was really cute!
