Lärmletter is an effort to round up interesting music events in Vienna twice a month, directly inspired by London Sound Index and nyc noise. It’s non-exhaustive by design, meaning we don’t aim to cover everything and that we also know we can’t even cover everything fulfilling any set of criteria. We try to focus especially on left-field and DIY music that’s not over-commercialised within different genres/scenes according to our knowledge, experience, and personal preferences. So some types of music we don’t feature a lot because we’re not so familiar with them. Well happy International Workers’ Day to all of you! Vienna (und Umgebung) is getting even busier with Donaufestival and Hyperreality around the corner, but as you’ll see, outside of festivals there is so so much interesting and exciting and also good! happening, not least of all some seriously packed fundraiser events that we’re so grateful to see happen.
(Speaking of fundraisers, I know there’s many, but from a personal side, a comrade needs to still fundraise a bit over €5.000, essentially for getting brutalised by police… see here.)

Seeing Donaufestival approach again, an occasion that many of us have been attending rather ritualistically over the last years, it feels especially important these days to address the perversity of year after year passing by the prison walls of Justizanstalt Stein, that for some ill-begotten reason is plastered with completely contextless caricatures from the Karrikaturmuseum across the street. JA Stein has, since latest 2001, been a scene of multiple crimes and alleged crimes against prisoners, ranging from two cases of alleged murder by prison officials to extreme neglect. Just last month, there was one suicide and two attempted suicides in the prison; in one of the attempts, the inmate had very clearly warned he was about to set his cell on fire, but once he did do so, officials did not react for fifteen minutes. I don’t know how to end this or to segway into this list of music now, but well. It always feels a bit wrong and I think the fact I personally have never seen the prison addressed at this festival which kind of takes place around it feels somewhat descriptive of their muted political stance. Still - gorgeous place, some very good artists (some of which are also really staunch politically) coming this year once again, and also thanks for the press ticket we got…
